The RW element that seems lacking is just the sort of oversea aspect that
Glassco mentioned: more profitable trade overseas.
In a [real fantasy] world, there would be roundships stuffed to the gills
with tradegoods going from continent to continent, selling things they
bought cheaply in, say, Provinia to Krussos. A common good in Provinia
would be a rare good in Krussos. (Provinia grows citrus, Krussos does
not... and so forth)
Here in G2, the common goods are hardly worth the time it takes to
transport, while the rare goods are all overland and temporary. Continent
to continent trade just isn't going to happen. (Likewise, piracy,
armadas, and more general conflict.)
If I was rewriting trade, I would group the tradegoods into categories:
luxuries, meats, vegetables, spices, finished goods, etc., and make at
least one rare and common on each continent. There would still be money
to be made moving items locally (and from rare goods), but much more from
taking them off-continent. X% of the off-continent markets would buy the
common/rare off-continent goods, and they would be marked up much less
than the true rare goods, but enough to make them worth carrying.
Further, because I love randomness, I'd have them change every few game
years just to make the game a continuing challenge. (the off-continent
markets would differ among themselves as to exactly how much each paid for
something)
As far as the current rare goods thing goes, I think they're worthwhile to
the trader, but I don't have enough experience to see how they're open for
abuse.
