I apologize for my earlier mistatement. I had read the rules wrong and have
been corrected. Although, this does bring up an interesting point. This is
a very bad offense against realism. Archers, traditionally, were
slaughtered if the enemy infantry got to their positions as a bow is a very
poor close in weapon. Crossbowmen are even wrose at close in combat as it
take a long time to reload a crossbow. These facts are reflected in the
attack ratings of the units (an elite archer can be thought of as an archer
with melee training and weapons as a back up.) But the combat system
invalidates those as a x-bowman has an effective combat rating of 6,1,25
(6.25 is 1/4 of 25, so that would be the lowest a x-bowman could fight at)
making him a better attacker than a soilder.
