Your friend is correct. An elite archer will fight with an attack
rating of 75 in the front.

None of the missile troops are a good example, so lets pretend a
crossbowman has a rating of (10, 10, 25). In clear weather he
fights with an attack of 25 in the front or the rear, but in fog
he would attack with 10 in front but only with a six in the rear.
