I'd like to throw out a couple comments:

Now I have not seen the combat code so most of this is only guesses.

a) Combat strength is calculated at the beginning once with the
weather effects added in.

b) Combat in G2, gives all alive units ONE attack each round, in the
old days with a large force attacking a small the small might not
have ever gotten an attack in, now they trade blows until the
small
force runs out of candidates and then the large flails away till
they also run out of candidates. Repeat until a winner.
(all alive units, this means a unit killed before being selected
to attack would never get in a attack, as I understand it).

c) Peasants, sailors etc., if defenders will also fight, and will not
just be target dummies.

This is IMHO.
