I don't want to blame anyone here but I feel that you should
have mailed the person(s) in question that you were coming
and what your intentions were. The ones that killed you probably
felt threatened by your scout and thought you had other intentions
than just exploring.
Instead of feeling threatened, why don't you try reasoning with
your neighbour and come to an understanding.
