Put your nobles behind if they're important (mages, priests) or if they're
leading bows. Have your 2nd rank nobles learn archery.

As far as quantity over quality, don't forget that numbers do count. The
more numbers, the more attacks. A mix of quality and quantity is probably
better, unless you're concerned about weight or a per head cost. Also note
that even serious foes can kill only one unit per turn -- would you rather
it be an elite guard or a soldier?
