Enough about trade already

Having a steady source of income is certainly important, but the
value of gold drops off dramatically at some point. I spent a
lot of G1 being 1st in gold (my faction wasn't called the Ferengi
for nothing), but sitting on half-a-million did not really enable
me to do anything that I couldn't have done with far less. So
maybe trade makes too much money, maybe it should be trimmed. I
don't know. And I don't really care. At some point all that gold
just becomes spoils for somebody else anyway. And if some people
enjoy seeing the numbers on their turn sheet get bigger and bigger
every turn, I say, why not? Admittedly, this can become a problem
if you could actually buy useful stuff (like say, Noble Points).
But you can't, so a big pile of gold is really only useful for
supporting an army (and/or moving one into Hades). And once you
can support an army so large you can barely move, the extra gold
isn't doing you much good.
