And now back to OLYMPIA!

Unless a unit has a ranged attack it will not fight unless it is in the
lowest rank with troops.
A D R
Soldier 5, 5, 0
Swordman 15, 15, 0
Pikemen 5, 15, 0
Crossbowmen 1, 5, 25

So regardless if the above numbers a right lets use A = attack
D = deffense, and R = ranged.

Only the crossbowmen will fight if they are not in the front rank.

Noble 1 (behind 7) with Pikemen
Noble 2 (behind 5) with Swordmen & Soldiers
Moble 3 (behind 8) with Crossbowmen

All the troops at behind 5 and 8 will fight.
The Pikemen at behind 7 will not engage the enemy until all
Swordmen & Soldiers are killed.

So it is normal to have two nobles used in combat. One should have
archery and lead the range troops. The other guys skill should probably
include at least Fight to the Death. Cause if your gona fight you might
as well fight to win.

Well, I believe that the pike (in RL) is about 7 foot long; the best defensive
use of a pike is to put it in the second rank sticking forward between
swordsmen. A charging opponent has to stop to keep from getting impaled and
the swordsmen then whack at them while they are avoiding the pointy end of the
pike.
