I don't think there is a problem with smashes (I don't like the
name, but I think the concept is valid) other than it might be
hard to have much intuition about the likely results of a fight
between disparate forces. But that is already hard with the
current system, so it's not clear that it is a problem.
Indeed, you could *combine* this suggestion with the "side selection
based on sqrt of number of men" idea, which would make a small,
powerful force be truely heroic, and make crossbowmen die like
flies if they get involved in hand-to-hand combat. I happen to
think both of these are probably good things, but others may feel
that doing both together may bias things too much in favor of
small numbers of powerful units.
