The Moghul Sweep (Bright Hills' Baronial Birthday)

February 7

It is with great pleasure that we announce the 4th Birthday celebration of the Bright Hills, and the first years' tenure of Temur and Ekaterina, Baron and Baroness. In honor of this great occasion, and with great deference to Baron Temur's position as Khan of the Clan White Wing, a feast incorporating dishes from China, the Himalayas, the Moghul Empire, and Persia will be served. Site opens at 10 AM and closes at 10 PM. There will be feasting. There will be dancing. There will be singing. There will be festivities beyond your wildest imaginings. There will be gnashing of teeth and rending of garb if you miss this one.

Activities: There will be two A&S competitions and a display. The "Look What I Did" display will feature works by members of the Barony, and are not limited to period or SCA items. One competition will be for any items in the Baronial colors of Black, White, and Gold. The second competition will be of items of an Asian or Middle Eastern nature. This can include anything from Persia to Japan, and can be armor, food, clothing or textiles, jewelry, or anything, so long as it can be documented as Asian or Middle Eastern. We will also have classes, and a Middle Eastern Drumming and Dancing Workshop, and one area of the Hall will be set aside as a Decadence Den, with lounging on pillows and carpets, burning of incense, and nibbling of sweet tidbits.

A fabulous FEAST will be prepared by Lord Havelyard of Bourne, featuring an array of comestibles. Part of the hall will feature low tables on carpets, so bring cushions or pillows on which to sit. (We'd also appreciate any rugs you can bring to cover the concrete floor.) The rest of the hall will have traditional tables for convenience and comfort. (We wish to please everyone.)

The cost is $12.00 on-board, in advance $6.00 off-board, in advance, $14.00 on-board after January 20th or at the door, and $7.00 off-board. The feast is limited to 100 people, so make your reservations early! Reservations not claimed by 3:00 pm will be sold at Troll. Make checks payable to The Barony of the Bright Hills/SCA, Inc., and send them to the Autocrat, Lady Isabel of Biconyll (Izzie), and state your preference for floor or table seating. Please note that the only reservation is a paid reservation. Please contact Lord Havelyard with any dietary concerns. Merchants are more than welcome, and may contact Izzie. The address, etc. for both Autocrat and Feastocrat are: 1406 Long Corner Road, Mt. Airy, MD 21771 (301) 829-8870, email: IZZYANDHAVELYARD@prodigy.net.

Southern Assessment Battles

February 7

The Canton of Kestrel's Keep by order of our Kingdom Warlord will be hosting a day of fighting on February 7, 1998 at Hillcrest Middle School in Dalzell SC. Lord Vidar the Horse has graciously offered the grounds of his mundane livelihood for fighting and no frills. If you want to fight you need to be there. We are going to fight, eat some stew for lunch and then fight again until you can't fight anymore. Folks, you know we take great pride in being from the South but rumor has it that we don't travel and show up in force. Well, here is our chance to back up our bark. Of course we will need the armies to the North of us to attend so we have something to swing at. In order for the day to be complete we will need all of the kingdom's Archers present because you guys are sporting quite a "rep". Lord Phillip Bell will also be entertaining the Rapier community in whatever your war interests seem to be on this particular day. His Majesty Logan has offered to MIC this event so you know we will be doing some fighting. We just want to fight (did I mention that?), eat some stew and burn things at night. Some say we may even consume some ale. There is always a war going on somewhere and this day will aid us in getting our army ready to fight.

Accommodations: No prepaid reservations will be accepted, but a courtesy phone call (so we can get a head count) would be nice. There are numerous motels close by for lodging or bring a tent and stay at the site of the post revel, which is Lord Vidar's home less than 2 miles away. Everyone is welcome. If you have any questions please call either Lady Christianna Del Falco (803) 666-2317 or the Autocrat Lord Vidar the Horse (Randy Stagner) 22 Westside Street, Dalzell, SC 29040, (803) 499-4594.

Cost: The cost is $5.00 with all children being free. Make checks payable to Canton of Kestrel's Keep/SCA, Inc.

Oyez ! Oyez ! Hark the heralds call, it is time to dust off the Christmas armor and come to the Tourney of Ymir, Atlantia's oldest running tourney. This year's Ymir will include a heavy fighting tourney, a rapier tourney, archery, a knife and axe throwing competition, Arts & Sciences competition, a fire-side bardic and everyone's favorite CAMBOK ! This will also be the investiture of the new Windmasters' Hill Baron and Baroness as well as a touching send off for our current lovely Baroness.

Rapier Tourney -Ragnarok is upon us! Come gather with gods, giants, dwarves, demons and elves on the plain of Vigrid for the last battle. (This means Melees!) For those who prefer individual fighting - the wolf Fenris has broken his chains. Dare you face the challenge the gods themselves declined? Instead of a bear-pit, we're running a WOLF-pit . . .

Heavy Weapons - Tourney to be fought in traditional holmgangr style. This double elimination tourney will be run by our own Duke Sir Anton with melees afterward if time permits.

Archery - IKAC scores will be taken for kingdom, with a special appearance by Sven the Wonder Target (TM). Remember score early - score often.

A&S - There will be a competition for arms and armour (pre-1100 Norse preferred), pre-1100 furniture (Norse theme encouraged), and last but not least - a Norse theme Bardic competition ! (Poems and theatrics are always welcome in Elvegast.) There will also be a "Novice" competition in all of the aforementioned categories. A "Novice" being defined as someone who has been practicing that skill less than a year. Please bring documentation (doesn't need to be extensive) for all competitions.

The site opens at 6 PM on Friday and closes at 12 noon on Sunday. The site is discretely wet - NO ORIGINAL CONTAINERS ! The main hall will have a fire going all day. Cabin space is available - but limited. Camping space will also be available.

The feast will accommodate 130 people and the seats are expected to go fast. Lord Duncan will be serving up a wonderful groaning board feast. Vegetarian dishes will be available. Any dietary concerns should be sent to Lord Duncan at Tabrady@mindspring.com. The gentle folk of Kappellenberg will be preparing a hearty lunch large enough to fill the mightiest of Norseman appetites. Seek them in the merchant area.
