There will be a total of 72 hours of classroom and workshop instruction in addition to teaching of heavy weapons and rapier skills in an outdoor setting.

The catalog and preregistration form appeared in the October issue of The Acorn. An electronic version, which is up-to-date, is located at http://www.pbm.com/~lindahl/atlantia/university_atlantia.html. If you have the option, please check the electronic version as it contains a few corrections and updates.

The site will open at 9:00 and the first class will start at 10:00 a.m. The last class will finish at 5:30 p.m. and everyone is expected to leave by 6:00 p.m. The lunch break will be from noon-1:00 p.m., with Convocation at 1:00 p.m. and classes resuming at 1:30 p.m. The good people of Misty Marsh will be serving a lunch on-site as a fundraiser at about $5 per person, and there are a number of restaurants are within an easy drive. To the site: Take your best route to I-95 and Florence, SC. Take exit 170 for Hwy 327, heading south. (This is four lanes--north is only two.) There are signs on the Interstate for Francis Marion University and Myrtle Beach. Go 5 miles to the first stop light (do not include the blinking caution light). Hwy 327 turns left, intersecting with Hwy 301 and Hwy 76. This area is usually heavily patrolled, so watch your speed. Proceed about 1.5 miles to the next light. Turn right. The college is then on your left. Use Gate 2 or Gate 3 and park in Lot A or Lot E. The buildings we are using are connected by a breezeway on the ground floor.

To the hotel: Take your best route to I-95 and Florence, SC and take exit 164. Go north toward Darlington. The motel is less than 1/2 mile from the interchange and is on the right behind the Shoney's. There are numerous restaurants and other lodgings in this area.

The Feast of St. Dismas

November 14 - 16

Come join the Canton of Cyddlain Downs as they host the last (relatively?) warm event of the fall season! The Feast of St. Dismas is fast approaching, and there must be gold to pay the chef, so strap on your armor (ignoring the bite of chilled metal) and come steal it! There will be enough fighting for the most gung-ho of fighters.

If you're of a less martial frame of mind, or if it's just too blessed cold, the friendly, hospitable, and penurious (that's poor) natives of Cyddlain Downs would gladly feed you and your crew for a pittance! (See below for exact amount of pittance.)

For heavies, there will be the traditional Gold Hunt-and-Slay, but can you hold the gold? (perhaps with a few new ideas thrown in to guarantee the poor Marshal in Charge, Sir Alfred of Cres, a few more gray hairs ) Rapier fighters will warm the cooling Fall air with their-dare we say it?-rapier wits, as well as the rapiers themselves (That's too many rapiers for comfort!)

Lady Rachel Wallace of Clan O'Shannon (who got politely suckered into this by the Autocrat), will be acting as host for the canton's two A&S competitions. The first competition will be a no documentation required cross-stitch competition to benefit Her Atlantian Majesty's award token Pile-o-Stuff, in order that she may recognize the fine artisans of the kingdom. Make as many as possible, but submit only one for judging. [Pattern will be available at various events leading up to Dismas] The second competition will be General Open.

This will be a below-the-salt event so the feast will be hearty but fairly simple. Fees? Would we charge our friends? Well, yes, remember, we're penurious. So we have to charge, but you're all such good bargainers, we'll give you our bottom line: Day-trip, off-board: $5. Day-trip on- board: $10. On-site, off-board: $8. On-site, on-board: $13 (mucho Cabins or camping space available -- both tent stands and flat space but get those reservations in early)! Under 18 is half price and 5 or younger are guests of the Canton. Make checks payable to Canton of Cyddlain Downs/SCA Inc.

Reservations should be mailed to the Autocrat: Janos of Cyddlain Downs (Greg Prevost), 106 Rollingwood Dr., Lexington, SC 29072, (803) 356-9519, email: gregp@ix.netcom.com. No phone reservations please, but if you have a question feel free to contact me.

OK, we've sold you and you're madly in love with the concept of showing up -- and it's only about 8 miles off I-20! Even better. The site (which, not coincidentally, is the same exact site as for To The Point) is Camp Congaree in Lexington, SC. The site opens at 5pm Friday and closes 12 noon Sunday.

Directions:

From I-20: Take Exit #55. Turn EAST on Hwy. 6. After 7.2 miles (we counted foot by foot!) Hwy. 6 will merge into Hwy. 302. Continue on this merged road for ~1 mile until you see the Camp Congaree sign on the right. (BEWARE - it sneaks up on you) *Turn right onto Crystal Springs Drive. Follow that for ~1.8 miles and look on your right for Noah Lucas Road (DIRT- lousy handling). Turn on Noah Lucas and follow it for ~.6 miles. Camp entrance (Double fenced gate) will be on your right. BEWARE! Noah Lucas Road is a "circle", that is, it meets back up with Crystal Springs Drive, so if you get back to Crystal Springs, you've gone too far.

From I-26: Take #113 -- Turn toward the Airport onto Highway 302. Follow 302 for 10.2 miles to Camp Congaree Sigh on right. Continue at * above. Parking lot is on the right as you enter, but feel free to follow the road around to the main hall (largest building you can see-can't miss it) where the penurious, friendly, hospitable Troll will separate you from your hard-earned dollars as painlessly as possible.

A Pilgrim's Progress

November 22

'Twas a time of exploration and adventure upon the high seas. The Barony of Tir-y-Don invites all good gentles to join us on our Pilgrim's Progress as we journey to new and exotic lands and meet strange and wondrous peoples. But, a word of caution, traveling on the high seas can be dangerous, so be wary of random acts of piracy (we hear they are running rampant around the Barony).

So come all ye would-be adventurers and set sail with us. Let those who would fight take up arms to determine who will lead the pirate resistance and repel the evil hordes. Let those whose aim is true take up their bows to keep the enemy at bay. For those quiet times, when the seas are calm, we will play games and dance. We would request that all artisans come and show off their works, that we may impress the peoples of this new land with our talents.

And finally, as all journeys must come to an end, we will celebrate with a feast to give thanks for our safe and pleasant arrival (barring an appearance of pirates).

SITE: The site is Camp Chickahominy, Lightfoot, VA. The site is DRY. Site opens at 9 am and closes at 10 pm.

FIGHTING: There will be a single elimination Main Mast Tourney. There will be a double elimination tourney to determine the leader of the pirate resistance. Then there will be a grand Pirates vs. the Resistance melee.

ARCHERY: The archers of Tir-y-Don challenge all other archers to a three-man tourney. Either come with your own team, or make one up when you get here. There will also be a novelty shoot.

ARTS/SCIENCES: There will be an open Arts/Sciences competition. Please bring out your pretties for all of us to see.

FEAST: There will be a sumptuous feast prepared by Countess Cara Marie of Carlisle (Linda Farris). A light lunch will be provided. If you have any dietary concerns, please contact the feastcrat at (757) 887-3408. Please no calls after 9 p.m.

COST: On-board $8.00 adults, children 6-12 half price, children under 6 are free. Off-board $4.00 adults, children 6-12 half price, children under 6 are free.

RESERVATIONS: Please send both on-board and off-board reservations to the autocrat or co-autocrat, Lord Galen the Traveller (Bill Taylor) or Lady AEthelflaed of Staefforda (Angie Taylor), 15 Deep Creek Rd, Newport News, VA, 23606, (757) 930-9539 (NLT 10 p.m.), email: halic@aol.com or ladyae@aol.com. Toys for Tots Tourney

November 22

The winds blow cold, but hearts grow warmer, as the Canton of Falcon Cree once again invites one and all to our 6th annual Toys for Tots Tourney. We welcome you to a day of heavy weapons style tourney, rapier combat, Arts and Sciences competitions and children's activities. The site, The Pavilion Recreation Center in Taylors, SC, opens at 10AM and closes at 7PM.

The heavy weapons tourney will be a style tourney with the shield and weapon portion being double elimination, and the great weapon, pole weapon and dual weapon being single elimination. The winner of each style will fight in that style against the other winners for the Toys for Tots Championship Sword.

There will be two A & S Competitions, the first being for the best handmade Medieval Toy or Game (that has not won in a previous year). The second will be an Open Category. A prize will be awarded for the best entry in each category.

The children's activities will consist of a variety of games and contests. Benevolence of spirit should be instilled in the children of Atlantia. We would therefore like to see the children contribute toys to the less fortunate. These contributions should not be centered on expense, but on the idea of charity. It has been rumored that Father Christmas will be making an appearance this year.

The entry fee for each person attending this event is the donation of a new, unwrapped toy of an approximately $10 value. Each weapons style entered, as well as each A & S entry will require the donation of a toy. The donations will be presented to a Marine Corps representative at court. The Marine Corps will distribute the toys to less fortunate children for Christmas.

Dinner will be at Austin's at the Marriott on Pelham Rd. following the event for any gentles interested. There will also be a post revel at Northslope Apartments on E. North St. Maps showing both will be provided at the event. Crash space will be available, but gentles desiring it should contact the autocrat in advance to be assured of space.

Please remember that this is a public demo. All armor should be in good repair. No rusty, broken, or duct taped armor will be allowed.

For further information, please contact the autocrat, Sorcha the Red (Terri Morris), 2950 E. North St. #300C, Greenville, SC 29615, (864) 322-6170, email: terrimorris@kemet.com
