Third Annual Baronial Hunt

June 13-15

The Canton of Spiaggia Levantina invites all gentlefolk to the great forests of the Eastern Shore of Maryland for the great hunt. The Beast has been pursued for many a day and night, and now sleeps in the historic Furnace Town site of Snow Hill, MD. The Beast has sent many good fighters to the summerlands. Only the most brave should attend this glorious event. Beasties lurk in the ancient forest, and many perils await! BEWARE those who would take advantage of our fun, those would sneak in to hunt without permission. Poachers are swiftly dealt with on the Baron's land!

For all who wish to sharpen their archery skills, try our target range. It takes a sharp eye and strong draw to strike our targets. If ye be more inclined to the art of the rapier, gain the chance to test your skills of speed and dexterity against others. After the morning showing of might, relax to watch a human chess game. Or even sign up and become involved as a playing piece. As the shadows lengthen and the summer's day draws to a close, the Baron of Bright Hills shall hold court. Awards and prizes shall be given to those who have distinguished themselves.

Following court, we invite you to feast with us! Sample the fare and fun for which Spiaggia Levantina is known! Perhaps we shall dine on the Great Beast itself, and surely hear the bold tales of its capture! Afterwards a bonfire will be lit and we shall clear the "barn" for a chelidh. Join in with dancing of all kinds, from the refined steps of high courts, to the toe tapping, carefree rythms of English country dancing. If you are a little rusty, join with one of the dance workshops during the day to sharpen your skills.

Other events during the day you may wish to include in your schedule:

Let the artisans celebrate the richness of high summer with an A&S competition for the most creative use of flowers. We invite you to dazzle our senses as you improve upon Mother Nature! For those with a more practical green thumb, there shall be an herbalist's test of knowledge as we challenge you to identify the gifts of wood and field we set before you.

Spiaggia welcomes the youngest citizens of proud Atlantia. Their day shall include armor making, games, and arts and crafts, all with "small's-safe" materials. For a quiet moment in the shade of tall trees we shall weave for them tales both fun and magical. A boffer tourney shall be held, but please remember, smalls can be fragile, so we ask that you bring their safety equipment. A dance class shall provide the chance to learn the "Maltese Bransle" without getting squished!

Cost shall be $13 onboard and $8 offboard. We shall open the site at noon on Friday and close it at noon on Sunday. Camping will be on site. We would like to point out that the site is discreetly wet. A special discount is available for minstrels, and entertainers who wish to show off their talents. As was tradition long past, they must sing for their supper. Merchants shall also receive a favour for showing their wares. Since they must do battle with the Great Chesapeake Bay Bridge Troll, we shall return that which he took.

Please make checks payable to Spiaggia Levantina/SCA, Inc. and send them to Avanasiia Volokhov (Tracy Wright) (see autocrat for address, etc.)

Autocrat: Braenden y Mad (Chris Wright), 202 Brooklyn Avenue, Salisbury, MD 21801, (410) 543-4920 (NLT 9 p.m.), email: raven.rose@juno.com

Roxbury Mill Country Fair

June 14

Summer is coming and we want to run into the fields and play. The Shire of Roxbury Mill invites little people to bring their parents, big people to bring their friends and everybody to walk the Fairway in persona at our Country Fair on June 14. You'll see period artisans producing period goods. We'll play period games of chance and compete for glory in period field games (CAMBOK!! and others). Merchants and peddlers will try to separate you from your gold, and we'll dance and sing and play as entertainers entertain us.

The site fee is a budget-friendly $3.00 per head with a $12.00 family maximum. There's no feast, but we have a non-alchoholic tavern whose profits benefit one of our deserving SCA Charities. Which one? You decide. If you buy something, you get a vote. The charity with the most votes gets the donation.

The site opens at 11:00 AM on Saturday (Fairway setup is Friday evening) and is wet. We don't have to leave until we want to. Shade is at a premium so bring your own. Water must be transported a short distance so water jugs would also be convenient to have handy. We're trying to keep things period so please help us out by bringing cooler covers, etc. Contact the Autocrat if you wish to camp, if you need crash space, or if you need space on the Fairway (Artisans, Entertainers, and Merchants are welcome indeed). Send reservations to the Autocrat: Lady Aurora Astore (Dawn Skully), 12401C Hickory Tree Way, Germantown, MD 20874, (301) 540-8697, email: dskully@hns.com. Make checks to: SCA Inc, Shire of Roxbury Mill. Pre-registration is encouraged so we can predict how to stock the tavern and how many different games we'll need to run at one time. We look forward to your company at the Fair.

Directions:

GET A MAP. Find your best way to I-270 in Maryland. Take Rt 118W (toward Germantown). Rt 118 zigs to the left at a light at Wisteria Drive (4th light, I think) and then to the right at the next light so be careful. Drive through the light at Clopper Rd (Rt. 117 - unless, of course, it's red) and travel another quarter to half mile. The site - Phillips Farm - will be on the right. If you've gone as far as Riffleford Rd, you've gone too far. Turn around and come back, we're waiting for you.

Highland River Melees

June 20-22

Close your eyes. Imagine walking between bedecked tents and pavilions to fields resplendent with the flash of color and steel. On one side, the flair and grace of rapier combatants catches your breath. Their banter fills your ears and the cheers of the crowd fuel their ardor in combat. Further down the road the clash of steel turn to din as armored fighters engage in field and obstacle melees. Since you're interested in visiting historical landmarks, you stop and see the tree that felled Prince Cuan II from a melee years ago. Past the field lies a castle wall and a moat. The familiar thwack of arrow in target draws applause from the gallery crowds. Monsters from mythology rise up from the nearby lake in an attempt to make us their prey. It is up to the archers to save everyone! Hunger draws you back toward the main encampment. As you wind your way past merchants displaying their tempting wares, you stop at the stage to watch minstrels, players, and dancers. Finally, as day dims to night, you find the feast pavilion, sit and join a sumptuous feast. Later you fill your toasting cup and join a fire whose flames cast light on bards or listen to the drums as they encourage dancers. The best part is you can open your eyes. This is not a dream: this is the Highland River Melees.

There will be melee fighting all day. The type of scenarios depends on how many fighters attend. Authorizations will begin at 10 am sharp. Melees will begin at 11 am and will continue until the last fighter calls it quit. We would like to extend an offer to all combat archers! We hope that you will attend, and would be happy to run scenarios involving you. There will be rapier fighting. Again, the type of scenarios depends on how many rapier fighters attend. Rapier authorizations will begin at 10 am.

There will be target archery which will be different from past melees. There will be a scaffold shoot, a moat shoot, an assassin shoot and advancing monsters. There will be prizes given to the best shooters of the day in each category. A grand prize will be awarded to the overall best archer. Archery will start at 10 am.

There are numerous other activities during the day. An A&S exhibit is scheduled, run by Master Daniel of Rutland, which will display works completed or in-progress. A play, written by Anjuli McDonald of Clanranald, is scheduled during the day. Children's activities are planned, but parents will be expected to supervise. There will be bardic circles, belly dancing and drumming well into the night. Merchants are encouraged, and there is plenty of room to set up.

The feast will be prepared by Baron Damon Argent, with guest cooks Master Chirhart Blackstar and Lord Halveyard of Bourne. Vegetarian dishes will be served. If you have any kind of food allergies, please contact the Feast Master, Baron Damon Argent (Alan Feldman) at 19511 Porterstown Road, Keedysville, MD 21756, (301) 416-2882. The site is dry by day; discreetly wet after dark. Feast is limited to 150 seats. Also, tables for feast are limited, so if you can bring any to share it would be greatly appreciated.

There is no cost for site fee, camping and off-board dining. The on-board cost is $7 before June 10th, and $9 thereafter. Reservations must be post marked by June 10th. Make checks payable to The Shire of Highland Foorde/SCA , Inc. Mail reservations to the Autocrat, Lord Adam of Erin (Warren Ryan, Jr.), 915 Chestnut St. Hagerstown, MD 21740. (301) 416-8715. The site is a public park which means ABSOULUTELY NO PETS PERMITTED AT ALL, except guide animals. Guide ferrets, guide iguanas, or like animals do not count.

The site is the Jonathan Hager House in Hagerstown, MD. The site opens at 5:00 pm, June 20th and closes at 3:00 pm, June 22nd.
