Boat Wars VIII

May 2-4

Come join the Canton of Buckston-on-Eno for our annual Boat Wars. This year the event is at a new location south of Raleigh, the Optimist Farm. In addition to the melee fighting scenarios which have made Boat Wars famous, we will be holding a bardic competition, an A&S competition, a quest and having good times for all! The site opens at 8 pm on Friday, and closes at noon on Sunday.

The fighting will include a booty battle so be sure to bring booty ($5.00-$10.00 items of a non-alcoholic nature). Our mighty navy is preparing for war so be ready to fight in close quarters.

The A&S competition will be for the best Norse or Celtic garb for a teddy bear or other stuffed animal. There will also be an open A&S display.

The bardic competition will be similar to last year's with winners based on audience appreciation. An outdoors bardic circle is planned for the evening, as well as dancing in the hall.

Our feasthall this year is somewhat smaller than our usual, so advance registration is necessary to be sure of a spot on board. Our head cook is Jocetta Thrushleigh (as she was last year), so the feast should be excellent.

For the non-combat oriented, we will have a Celtic and Nordic themed quest with booty, Norse runes and target archery all featuring prominently.

Site fee is $6.00 per person and the Feast fee is $4.00. Make checks payable to Buckston-on- Eno/SCA, Inc. Tent camping is available and encouraged but there are no cabins. The site is discreetly wet. Send reservations to: Katherine Luvel, P.O. Box 62071, Durham, NC 27715, (919) 682-0551.

Celt Wars

May 2-4

Monstrous morning-monstrous season
hosts in turmoil-kings cast down
necks broken-a red sun
three hosts crushed-by the host of Ulster
about Conchobor-woman struggle
herds driven-the morning following
heroes felled-hounds cut down
horses mangled-tunics torn
the earth drinking-spilt blood
of gathered hordes.
from Thomas Kinsella's translation of the Táin Bó Cuailnge)

Beltane is here and, yet again, Storvik has heard rumblings that the Celts don't have quite enough cattle for their celebrations. Through our spies we heard, a confederation of Celtic clans has volunteered our Barony's herds for their greedy consumption. Storvik requests your aid in protecting our herds and fields. Or, if you're so inclined, you can join members of Anglesea, the Concusare, the KinderFodder, the Head Clan, Delradia, and Clan Preachaine (or, the Celts) on the field in the attempted (we hope!) Cattle Raid on Storvik. The days fighting will include Cattle Raids, Grand Mêleés, and a War God Tournament, and will continue until every fighter is lying on the field in pools of their own blood (figuratively, of course). There will be A&S Competitions for the best woading and the best early period crafts; minimal documentation required (no need to write us a term paper), and a Shoot the Barbarian Booth to entertain the masses. Sir Xenophon has even graciously offered to grill up the cattle who accidentally die in the fray. Also, we have heard that they will welcome your herds of sheep, your flocks of geese, and bevies of swine (Celts get so darned hungry pillaging). The site is discretely wet, and once we're all wet enough, we'll sing and play quaint Celtic musical favorites. (Please remember that the legal drinking age in MD is 21. . .)

The site is Watkins Park, 301 Watkins Park Drive, Largo, MD 20772. This site has water, toilets, and showers!

Site set-up begins at 12:00 noon, Friday May 2, If you arrive to early - You are drafted! Site closes 2:00 P.M. Sunday, May 4. If you stay to late - You are drafted!

The costs are as follows: $5.00 Off-Board; $10.00 On-Board, children under six are free, children 6-12 are half price.

Reservations must be received no later than April 28, 1997. Make checks payable to: SCA, Inc/Barony of Storvik

Rose Tour III

May 26

The gardeners of Atlantia are invited on the Third annual ROSE TOUR. As in previous years, the Tour is designed to give SCAdian gardeners a look at established plants of period roses in full bloom, with opportunities to buy or order what you admire. Mundane clothing is best for this mundane tour.. The gathering point is Mistress Elien of Sheffield's house, just off I-95 in Laurel, MD, at EIGHT THIRTY AM SHARP!!!, to get into car pools. (Note: If you cannot be that early, we can give directions for where we will be later in the morning.)

The first part is a twenty-minute drive to Karen Burroughs' garden of old roses. This magnificent private garden has been featured in national publications. (Be prepared to take notes of varieties you like.) We will arrive at nine and take about an hour.

From there we go to the Heritage Rosarium, about a three-minute drive. The Rosarium is a display garden of old roses. This is not a garden like Karen's, but focuses instead on the rose plants in collection. The Rosarium also sells rose plants. For any variety there or at Karen's, you can order cuttings rooted for pickup the following spring. But many of the varieties are there for sale already, "extra" cuttings from last year's orders, also established plants in larger pots.

The herd instinct will take us to an eatery for lunch. After lunch, we will terrorize Behnke Nurseries in Beltsville, MD, which has a fair selection of period (among the modern) plants. They're pricey, but the selection is wonderful and the quality top-notch.

The day will end at Mistress Elien's, with a tour of her own antique and period roses, and a Plant Exchange. Bring what you have extras of (it doesn't have to be period) and take home what other people bring. You do not have to bring to be able to take...

There is NO CHARGE since there are no expenses. But bring plenty of money to spend! And please, please call one of the co-organizers for directions, and to make sure we don't leave you behind if you're late: Mistress Elien of Sheffield (Michelle Hunter) 9303 Iron Stone Court, Laurel, MD (301) 725-5371 AND Master James of Rutland (Jim Dronenburg) 3536 Cemetery Circle, Knoxville, MD 21758, (301) 834-6515

Crash space can be arranged with advance notice.

Directions to Mistress Elien's:

From I-95 (N or S) exit on Route 216 towards Laurel, MD. At the first stop light (All Saints Road) turn left. Go to end where A.S. Road T-intersects into Whiskey Bottom Road and turn right. Then take the first right (King's Grant) and then the first left (Ironstone Court). The house is on the corner of Ironstone. You'll know it by the roses.

Novice Tourney And Storviki Baronial Championship

May 30 - June 1 Date of Event

This year's Novice Tourney and Storviki Baronial Championship Event will be held at beautiful Patuxent River Park, in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. The Baron and Baroness of Storvik invite one and all to join together for a weekend of fighting, feasting and festivity.

This year's fighting is being organized and overseen by Lord Oswulf the Grey. Novice fighters will have an opportunity to authorize. Multiple lists will be run, including the traditional Novice List. Novice and championships lists will be held on Saturday, and will include heavy weapons, light weapons, and archery. As a change of pace, and in preparation for War point archery, the archery marshal will offer a clout shoot.

In addition, there will be competitions in Bardic Arts and Arts & Sciences, as well as an open A&S display. The A&S competition will be held in two categories: first, items to be donated to the Kingdom to be auctioned off to benefit the Kingdom travel fund; second, heraldic display. Lists will be open to all, and there will be prizes for all victors, with the Baronial championship going to the highest-ranking Storviki.

The site opens at 7 p.m. on Friday and closes Sunday at 4 p.m. The lists will open at 10 a.m. on Saturday, with armor inspection and authorizations until 11:30, and competition thereafter. A splendid feast will be offered by our Head Cook, MacGregor, on Saturday night; those wishing to join us on-board should pre-register, as there will be very limited on-board space available at the door.

Alcohol on site is restricted to beer in kegs; we plan to make Good Beer freely available to those with proof of age at the Lusty Wench & Lucky Knave Tavern, brought to you by Tavernkeeper Mym the Minx and the wenches and knaves of House Drunken Badger. You are encouraged to "tip the wenches" (and knaves) but as we cannot take your coin, a more inventive approach may prove rewarding.

There will be children's activities, including arts & crafts, a nature walk, a class on "court manners," and opportunities for service, but a parent must be available to participate with the child; no baby-sitting will be provided.

This is a camping event, and separate specific firesides will be designated for evening entertainment (Bardic circle, dancing and drumming, and a quiet area). We are hoping to have a significant Bardic presence at this event and have set aside a beautiful grassy area, surrounded by woods, for the evening's Bardic fireside.

Because our ability to accept money on site is limited, you are strongly urged (PLEASE) to pre-register and pre-pay. Pre-registration fees are: on-board adult, $12; on-board 12-18, $10; on-board 6-12, $6; 5 and under our guests. Off-board fee is $6 for adults, $4 for those over 5. Fees will be slightly higher at the door. Please make checks payable to Storvik/SCA, Inc. Please send reservations to Lady Caitlin (see below).
