Sea Dog Tavern II (Under New Management)

March 8

In A.D. 1348, the people of [Italy] and of almost the whole world were struck by a blow other than war. For in addition to the famine...and to the wars...pestilence and its attendant tribulations appeared again in various parts of the world." (Jean de Venette, The Chronicle").

Because of such happenings and many others of a like sort, various fears and superstitions arose among the survivors [of the Black Death], almost all of which tended toward one end -- to flee from the sick and whatever had belonged to them. In this way each man through to be safeguarding his own health. Some among them were of the opinion that by living temperately and guarding against excesses of all kinds they could do much toward avoiding the danger...Others, arriving at a contrary conclusion, held that plenty of drinking and enjoyment, singing and free living and the gratification of the appetite in every possible way, letting the devil take the hindmost, was the best preventative of such a malady; and as far as they could, they suited the action to the word. Day and night they went from one tavern to another, drinking and carousing unrestrainedly. .... (Giovanni Boccaccio, The Decameron.)

Thus, we have the backdrop for this tavern event. The year is 1348. This same "Black Death" is advancing towards Milan, traveling by many routes, including with the flagellants, a group of men and women doing "public penance [by] scourging themselves with whips of hard knotted leather with little iron spikes. ...The object of this penance was to put a stop to the mortality, for in that time...at least a third of all the people in the world died." (Jean Froissart, Chronicles).

The Flagellants have been sighted fifteen miles outside the Milan City gates. History tells us that Milan survives relatively untouched by the Pestilence, perhaps this is why....

So Our Seaport Is Closed, The City Gates Are Locked, And Our Nobles Have Fled. Why Wait For Death At Home Alone? Make The Most Of The Time You Have Left By Enjoying The Bounty Of SEA DOG TAVERN (UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT) In Our New Location In Beautiful Pontecostia. While we have no cure for the Pestilence, we share your pain. (Caveat From Tavern's Solicitor: we share your pain at least until you run out of money).

Our tavern's new location on the banks of the beautiful Pontecostia River allows us to provide you with a safe location and numerous musicians and entertainers for your pleasure.* Our gaming tables and racetracks have odds set so much in your favor, that all but the most hopelessly unlucky are absolutely guaranteed to win!* We unconditionally guarantee you a peaceful meal,* with fine food,* drink* and splendid entertainment,* free of the murders, brawls, low-brow entertainment and food poisoning (rumors of poisoned customers have been greatly exaggerated by our competitors)that occurred under the previous management!* (*Note From Tavern's Solicitor: Not to be construed as a guarantee or warranty. Caveat Emptor.)
