This session of the University will be held at the Sacred Heart School in Danville, VA. For class information see the catalogue in the December issue of the Acorn. The site will be marked with Blue and White pennons.

Site opens at 9 am, classes start at 10 am, Lunch is 12-1 with a hour Convocation starting at 1. Classes resume at 1:30 and end at 5:30, site closes at 6 pm. For class schedules go to the University Homepage

There will be a lunch sponsored by the Shire consisting of Stew, Rabbit, Bread, Cheese, Cider and Lemonade. Cost is $1 - $3, make checks payable to the Shire of Drachentor/SCA, Inc. There is a suggested donation of $3 for the event, make checks payable to the University of Atlantia/SCA, Inc.

There will be a hospitality suite at the Howard Johnson's starting at 8. Directions to the Hotel should be available at the site.

Directions:

From the North: Take route 29 South to 29S Business into Danville. Follow signs from 86S cross over the Dan river and turn left at the first traffic light.

From the South: Take route 86 North into Danville. Look for the hospital under contstruction on the right and at the next traffic light make a right. If you cross the river you've gone too far.

Alternate directions from the South: Take Route 29 North past the 29 North Business exit to the Route 86 North exit. Turn left at the top of the ramp, go 2.7 miles and make the right at the 4th traffic light.

From the East: Take route 58W into Danville. Follow signs to Route 86S. Cross the Dan River and make a left at the first light.

From the West: Take route 58E into Danville. Follow signs to Route 86S. Cross the Dan River and make a left at the first light.


Runestone Collegium

February 8

The Incipient Canton of Aire Falchon invites you to the Barony of the Sacred Stone's Runestone Collegium. Similar to last year's collegium, we will be once again at Gaston College in Dallas, NC, the heart of Aire Falchon country. The emphasis - It's Time to Get Back to Basics!

The classes - there will be several "flights" this year:

The fighter's flight will include classes in making plastic armor, pressing a shield, the care and feeding of rattan, and what it takes to pass an authorization.
The children's flight will include SCA friendly toys, storytelling for little minds, food kids will really eat, and garb for the small. Any who have outgrown/leftover small garb are welcome to bring it for the yard sale/garb swap.
The newcomer's flight will have classes in the history of the SCA and the barony, courtesy and etiquette, officers and the Order of Precedence, and help for the garb making impaired (or what do I do, I've cut the neck too big!).
The A&S flight will include classes in making chain mail, leather working, cooking and entertainment.

The ever popular Exchequer's panic room will be back again, making it possible for you to complete your Exchequer's yearly report on time. Just bring your materials, we'll have adding machines, pens, pencils, paper, forms, a copier and expert assistance waiting for you.

The Yard Sale/Garb Swap is an opportunity to trade off or sell all those things that you've outgrown or don't want any more. Newcomers will have a chance to get some great stuff, and old timers will have a chance to liquidate extra items. We provide the place, you provide the stuff, pricing, and supervision of your goods.

The site opens at 9:00 with classes starting at 10:00. Site closes at 5:30. There will not be food on site, but there are a number of fast food places around for your convenience. The cost is FREE. (An old but honored tradition!)

Directions:

Take your best route to I-85 in Gastonia, NC. Take the US 321 exit and head North. A couple of miles up the road is the exit for Grier Beam Road and Gaston College. Take this exit and at the top of the ramp turn left. Follow this road around to the Clock Tower. Look to your right. You will see the Comer Engineering and/or Computer Sciences Building, which is our site. Enter the doors which open onto the parking lot next to the clock tower. There will be signs posted on campus.


Performers' Revel

February 8

On Saturday, February 8th in the vasty halls of Caer Bear, Mistress Fevronia and Master Igor will host their annual Performers' Revel! This is the gathering of all those who are interested in the performing arts - music, song, poetry, drama, dance and whatever you can stretch the definition to fit (it's been pretty elastic!). As always, we have no spectators - everyone attending must contribute one performance (see above re elastic definitions!). New performers are especially welcomed! This is an event of performers by performers for performers! Master Igor will conduct his annual demonstration that cooking is a performing art.

The event begins at noon on Saturday and goes until ?. The site is WET (Maryland drinking age is 21). Note to parents: small children may find it hard to sit quietly through performances, so you may wish to make appropriate arrangements. The cost of the event is $10, and it is by reservation only, due to space limitations. Please reserve early.

The event is held at our private residence, 2204 Amber Meadows Drive, Bowie, MD.

Take your best route to the Washington Beltway (Rt 495/I-95) and go to the exit for Route 50 East. If you think of the Beltway as a clock face with north as 12 o'clock, then the Route 50 exit is at roughly 3 o'clock. Take Route 50 east for about 6 miles, until you come to Route 301. Take Route 301 south for approximately 3 miles, until you come to Mitchellville Road (if you hit the light at Pointer Ridge, you've gone too far!). Turn right on Mitchellville Road. Go approx. 1/4 mile to Arbor Hill. Turn right on Arbor Hill. Take Arbor Hill until it dead-ends into Alderwood. Turn right on Alderwood. Take the first left, which is Alsted Place, and an almost immediate right onto Amber Meadows Drive. We are the 3rd house on the left, 2204.


Bright Hills Baronial Birthday and Investiture

February 8

Bright Hills cordially invites you to join us on February 8 for our Baronial Birthday and Investiture. Our celebrations will include feasting, dancing, and an arts and sciences competition featuring our Baronial colors of Black, Silver and Gold. Come witness the investiture of our new Baron and Baroness (who ever they may be).

The site is the Hampstead Volunteer Fire Hall in Hampstead, Maryland, opening at 11:00am and closing at 10:00pm. Any and all stragglers will be considered volunteer clean up crew. The hall is discretely wet. Due to space limitations there will be no planned childrens activities.

On board cost is $10.00 if received by February 1, $12.00 at the door. Off board $6.00 if received by February 1 and $7.00 at the door. From the South take 95 North to 695 West to 795 towards Reisterstown. Stay on 795 until the end (aprox. 8 miles) at the second light, turn left onto Rt. 30 West. Follow Rt. 30 for 8 miles. You will be in Hampstead and the Fire Hall is on the right after the 4th light in town. Signs will be posted starting at the 795\ Rt. 30 intersection. Please park in the parking lot around the back of the fire hall. Do Not block the front entrance to the fire hall.


Tourney of Ymir

February 14-16

Join us in celebrating the passing of Winter and the promise of Spring at the Tourney of Ymir at Camp Kanata, Wake Forest, NC. This SHAMELESSLY NORSE event will feature four activities of equal but unparalleled glory, ego gratification and loot. Even if you are not Norse, you can adopt that time honored Norse family values: relentless enthusiasm for LOOT! In case of bad weather, all fighting can be held indoors!

  1. ALL FOR ONE TOURNEY: We love mayhem from any period! Our Rapier Tavern Brawl features teams of three pitted against three of the Cardinal's Elite Guard. This could get ugly folks! Unconventional weapons are encouraged.
  2. HEAVY WEAPONS TOURNEY: Fought in a Holmgangr style eric. All types of shields allowed. Stand your ground and fight! Special recognition (loot) for the fighter deemed "Most Norse" in appearance or behavior.
  3. ARCHERY SHOOT-OUT: A Windmaster favorite! Human shaped targets, no mercy.
  4. ARTS & SCIENCE COMPETITION: YES! Show your stuff and gain recognition and glory in one or all of the following categories:

THE SITE: Opens at 6:00 pm of Friday the 14th and closes 12:00 noon on the 16th. The site is discreetly wet, NO ORIGINAL CONTAINERS! The main hall will have a fire going all day. Classes on various topics will be taught for those less martially inclined. The A&S competition will be here as well.

THE FEAST: We have a much larger hall than before. We can accommodate over 200 at table! Lord Hrothgar will supervise another groaning-board feast.

Mid-Winter's Masque IV

February 15

When the bitter cold winds come howling through your castle halls, and the boredom of winter threatens your sanity, harness your horses to the sleighs and journey to the balmy shores of the Barony of Marinus for a day of feasting, entertainment and dancing. The event will be held at Camp Darden (Girl Scout Camp) on Route 643 in Franklin, VA. There is a phone onsite for emergencies only (804) 562-2694. The doors open at 9 am Saturday and close 2 pm on Sunday. Troll is open from 10 to 5 pm. Activities will start by 11 am. The site is dry and no pets are allowed. A scrumptious feast will be prepared by Lady Lavendar Rose Morgan. The fees for the event are:

Activities: We will have dancing, boffer games, dart tourney, games tourney, period games to play and a feast at 6 pm. Children's activities include boffer games, fox-n-geese game, painting, necklaces and making masks. There will be a children's feast (5 pm) with "real food" and child care will be provided by Advantage. Marinus child care policy will be in effect. (Child care 6 to 11 pm).

Kingdom Fundraiser: Valentine Auction - bring money and a valentine to auction. Your valentine could be anything from a back rub, a card or garb instruction to a pie, basket of sweets, or some other service. The money raised will go to The Oak, Atlantia's A&S Newsletter.

Competitions: Best Dancing Garb, best reverance (bow/curtsy), best mask, best desert or sotelty (Baronial Fundraiser by penny vote), and an essay about medieval women (group or individual, real or fiction). Children's Competitions: best mask, best reverance. Call autocrat for details and rules of competitions.

Merchants: Set-up your wares and get in for 1/2 price!!! Bring tables and chairs.

Entertainers: Mid-Eastern dancers, Jugglers, Bards, Storytellers and Musicians; get $2.00 off site fee if you perform at least 3 times during the day for the populace. Contact the autocrat to be put on the entertainment list.

Bring your beds! There will be room for sleeping in the main hall and in Union Hall. Bring air mattresses, blankets and pillows for Saturday night. Call autocrat for crash space for Friday night. Union Hall will have quiet hours beginning at 9 pm. The halls are heated by fireplaces and some space heaters (bring one if you think you will get cold).

Take US 58 West Business Route through Franklin, VA. Turn right (left if you come from 58 East) onto Hunterdale Road. Go approximately 7 miles and turn left onto Route 632. Go 1 mile and turn left onto Route 643. The camp entrance is approximately 1 mile down on the right. Do not stop at the caretakers house. SCA signs will be posted.


Love Conquers All and We Must Yield to It

February 15

The Canton of Cyddlain Downs invites its neighbors to help us celebrate the greatest of emotions at Camp Congaree Girl Scout Camp in Lexington, SC. Troll will open at 6:00 on Friday and the site will close at noon Sunday.

The days events will challenge the lovers among us to prove their worthiness.

Heavy Competition will include two scenarios; a woods battle pitting the escort of the "Fair Lady of Cyddlain" against a band of highwaymen and then the guardsmen will attempt to rescue her from the bandits encampment.
Rapier Competitions will include a banner battle (the banner of rapier scarves will be presented to Her Highness for use during Her reign) and a timed points tourney with the winner of each bout receiving a token for his or her love.
Target Archers will compete in a "Red Hot Lovers Shoot" to determine the temperature of their ardor. Combat Archers will participate in the Heavy encampment scenario.
A&S Competitions will include: Best Favor, Best Persona Love Story and a Bard of Love competition (instrumental, vocal or poetic forms).

The day will end with a sumptuous 15th Century Italian Feast incorporating many aphrodisiacs of the period. Afterwards, we will dance and game until late while we refresh ourselves at the desert revel.

Nottinghill Coill Collegium

February 22

The Canton of Falcon Cree invites one and all to attend Nottinghill Coill's Collegium. There will be classes this year to interest all. Classes on Fighting, Brewing, Music, and a variety of Arts and Sciences are being offered.

The Site: Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church in Greenville, South Carolina. THIS SITE IS STRICTLY DRY FOR OBVIOUS REASONS AND WILL BE ENFORCED! The site will open at 8:00 am and classes start at 9:00 am. The will be a courtesy tavern on site and there are many local restaurants nearby.

The Cost: The Site fee is $3.00 for adults; children under 12 are guests of the Canton. Please pre-register for ensured class space. To obtain a course catalog write or call the autocrat. Midwinter Dance Revel

It is the midst of Winter and the snow falls all around. The cold wind blows across your estate, and your fire cannot lift the chill from your bones... Then suddenly, you remember your friends in the Barony of Lochmere are holding their MIDWINTER DANCE REVEL! So, come share our hearth and bask in the warmth of good friends, good food and great merriment!

This event will take place at the Epping Forest Clubhouse, Annapolis, Maryland, on February 22nd. The site opens at 11am and closes at 11pm. There will be music, dancing, games, and of course, the famous "Medieval Pursuit of Trivia", where even the most avid historians will be tested to the limits of their knowledge!

The day's events will be sustained by a breath-taking feast in the Lochmere tradition of excellence, prepared by Sir Xenophon Vaughn. Lunch will be served, and the site is wet.

From the North: Take your best route to I-97 South. From I-97, take exit 5, route 178 (General's Hwy). Go 5.3 miles to Epping Forest Road, and turn left. *Go all the way to the end (1.7 miles) to the Epping Forest Community. Go through the gate, and bear left onto Epping Way. Go to the one-way circle, go three-quarters of the way around, and turn left onto Severn Road. Follow Severn down the hill, the Clubhouse is on the left by the tennis court.

From the South: Take Route 50 East towards Annapolis. From 50, take exit 23, route 178 (General's Hwy), turn right at the bottom of the ramp. Go 1.4 miles to Epping Forest Road, turn right. Follow from * above.


Ice Ax

As February winds begin to blow
Showering us all with Ice and Snow
The time has come to face the facts.,
It's good to have an Ice Ax.

The College of Yarnvid has one and we invite you to share it with us at the Powhatan County Fair Grounds. This is a below-the-salt event, although it is rumored that the Quality may attend incognito, as they did last year. The site opens at 10:00, the list at 11:00. For heavy fighters, a traditional Holmgang will be offered, using viking weapons only. So bring your ax and your round shield for a rousing good time. Foriegners (Normans, Celts and the like) will be asked to use round shield only, assuming they feel the need for such protection . Games and activities for smalls will be provided throughout the day. Arts and sciences will be represented by contests and displays organized by Lord Ian Andrew de Scruggs, Yarvid's highly esteemed minister of Arts and Sciences.

A sumptuous feast, prepared by the High Lady Mavi of Black Diamond and her crew of busy elves, will highlight the day. Those with dietary concerns are encouraged to contact her at (804) 353-8293, before 9:00. Fees will be $10.00 on board and $4.00 off. A $2.00 surcharge is added after the feast of Saint Valentine to encourage early reservations. Directions:

Make your best way to U.S. Route 60, west of Richmond, Virginia. Approximately 10 miles from the Chesterfield/Powhatan County Line, The fair grounds appear on the north side of Route 60 and you are there. Signs will be posted to confuse the innocent. Route 60 is rife with hotels for those coming long distances. All of the major brands are represented within 20 miles of the site.
