Feast of St. Andrew

November 29 - December 1

The Canton of Tear-Sea's Shore may lie in the Lowcountry, but, as winter nears, its heart turns towards the Highlands. Once again, we invite to you to "Go Gael!" and join us at the Sixth Annual Feast of Saint Andrew on the weekend following Thanksgiving.

All our traditional competitions and festivities are planned, including the infamous boffer Celtic Cattle Raid (rumours have it that the wild Hieland men of Atlantia are also out for sheep this year!). And for those who find boffer weapons a little, well, light, there will be both mass weapons and claymore (great sword) tourneys. Weather permitting, we also plan on Scottish dancing on the green (instruction provided) and a period games tourney.

Competitions with a Celtic theme include best ale or mead (bonus points for "heather ale"), best Scots accessory, best Celtic illumination, best representation of a Celtic saint, etc. (For detailed rules, contact the autocrat.) And in the true Scots tradition, there will be several. . . rhetorical, that's right, rhetorical, competitions which should require considerably less preparation. . .

As night approaches, our cooks will serve the traditionally sumptuous three-course feast of delicacies from mountain and shore. After the feast, we plan on more dancing, singing, revelry and a luscious dessert table open to all. The site opens at 7 pm on Friday evening and closes at Noon on Sunday.

The cost for on-board reservations is only $8.00 for adults and $6.00 for children 6 or over, if payment is received by Nov ember 11. The price rises to $10 for adults and $8 for children over 6 for reservations paid by Nov. 25. (No charge will be made for children under 6.) Off-board - which includes the dessert table - is $4.00 for adults at any time. ON-BOARD SPACE IS SEVERELY LIMITED so we suggest you reserve early to avoid disappointment. If any on-board seats are available at the door, the fee will be $13 for adults and $11 for children.

Send reservations to Alisoun MacCoul of Elphane (E. L. Wimett, Box 522, Mount Pleasant, SC 29465). Make checks payable to the Canton of Tear-Sea's Shore, SCA /Inc. Note: questions will cheerfully be answered by telephone (803-881-5517) or email: silverdragon@charleston.net, but reservations must be made by mail or in person with payment.

I Pugni

November 9

On Saturday, November 9th, the Barony of Ponte Alto invites you to be their guest at "I Pugni", or "games of the fist." In period Venice, at any given time one half of the town had a dispute with the other half. In honorable fashion, each side would send a champion to meet in the middle over a bridge. They'd trade blows, and they'd rotate champions in this effort. Sooner or later though, one of the champions would do something unfair, and the offended side of town would rush the other side and fight over this bridge. In the spirit of this fine Italian tradition, we will be having rapier and heavy weapons (weather permitting) fighting in the form of a bear pit tourney and then, a resurrection bridge battle!

For those who do not wish to participate in a contest of arms, a dancing master and musicians have been persuaded to provide a treat for your ears and a fancy for your feet. There will also be two simple competitions: one for the most eye-pleasing cloved fruit, and another for the most pleasing favour made of ribbons. Of course, there will be prizes for the winners.

We'd also like to invite you to partake of a delicious feast of four removes marked by Italian ices to clear the palate, two meats, refreshing salatte, and a glorious subtletie as a crowning touch. The feast (another fine product of Ponte Alto) will be prepared by the cooks' triumvirate of Lady Muireann ni Riordain (Jessica Wilbur), Baroness Miriam Rachael bat Mordecai (Heather Swann), and Melusine Meleri ferch Iasper (Sharon Henderson). Dietary concerns should be directed to them via e-mail: ipugni@mail.maxson.com, or via phone to the autocrat.

The site is St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 4512 College Ave, College Park, MD 20740. As most of you know this church is splendid in it's beautiful courtyard, wonderful architecture and easy access. There is a playground available for small children (with your supervision) to play in.

The site permits wine only. Legal drinking age in the state of Maryland is 21 years old.
