University Atlantia XL

Unto all who read these words does Lady Karen Larsdatter med det Usigelige Efternavn fra Skyggedal, Site Autocrat for University of Atlantia, bid greetings and salutations.

It is indeed a great honor and privilege for the Incipient College of St. Stephen -- Another Fine Product of the Barony of Ponte Alto! -- to serve as the host chapter for the University of Atlantia. It is doubly an honor for me, because it happens to fall on my birthday!

Directions

The site will be Robinson Hall, on the Fairfax campus of George Mason University. (This was the site used last year for Collegium Borealis.) Please note that parking will be in the Visitors Parking Deck, and will cost $3 for all-day parking. Tell the parking lot attendant that you are here with the SCA.

FROM POINTS SOUTH: Take I-95 north. Exit onto the I-495 (Washington Beltway) to Rockville. Exit at Braddock Road west. (This is the first exit, so get over into the right lane quickly!) Go about 5.5 miles on Braddock Road. Turn right onto Roanoke Lane, an entrance to George Mason University. (There should be a gas station and University Mall on your left.) At the fork in the road, bear right. (You should be passing a lake on your left side, and the Patriot Center on your right.) Turn left onto Mason Drive. (This is the first left after the lake.) The parking deck will be on your right.

FROM POINTS NORTH: Take your best route to the I-495 (Washington Beltway), and exit at I-66 west. (The I-66 exit is at around 9:00 on the Beltway, if you think of it as if it were a clock.) Exit at 123 south (Exit #60). Go about 7.6 miles on 123. Turn left onto Braddock Road. Turn left onto Roanoke Lane, an entrance to George Mason University. (This is the first stoplight. There should be a gas station and University Mall on your right.) At the fork in the road, bear right. (You should be passing a lake on your left side, and the Patriot Center on your right.) Turn left onto Mason Drive. (This is the first left after the lake.) The parking deck will be on your right.

(If you must drop off equipment at the site, you may use the cul- de-sac to the side of Robinson Hall. To get to the cul-de-sac from Roanoke Lane, bear left at the fork in the road, so that you pass the lake on your right. Turn right onto the second street on your right (Lot I will be on your left). Bear right at the fork in the road. Continue going straight until the street ends; Robinson Hall is on the left side of the cul-de-sac, to the left of the statue of George Mason.)

To get to the site from the parking deck: Leave the parking deck from the third floor exit (to the Information Kiosk). Cross the cul-de-sac, and walk through the plaza past the statue of George Mason. Robinson Hall is on your left.

Victuals

The Barony of Ponte Alto is providing a small noontide repast for a small donation.

There will be a dessert revel in the evening, after classes. Please bring a dessert to share and feast gear/paperware for yourself. (Site autocrat's note: It's my birthday party, and everyone's invited!) The dessert revel will be held in the middle and back ballrooms at Student Union Building II, a short walk from Robinson Hall. The site will close at 10:30 PM.

Crash Space

Several individuals in the Barony of Ponte Alto have volunteered to host out-of-town guests for University. If you are in need of crash space, please contact the site autocrat via farspeaker at (703) 993-5504 or (703) 476-5683, or via electronic carrier- pigeon at kgreen2@osf1.gmu.edu.

Yours in Service to the Dream,

Come one, come all to

Caer Mear's 21st Birthday Party

Dear Friends,

On June 14th, 15th and 16th, Caer Mear will be celebrating our 21st anniversary. We will be having a truly medieval event, that is to say, PRIMITIVE. The site is Sawyer's Field, near the corner of Azalea Avenue and Meadowbridge Road in Richmond, Virginia. We will be camping, so bring your pavilions and your coolers, your camp stoves and your imagination. Also your water, as this is, indeed, a primitive site. The site is discretely wet, no original containers.

We are planning a gala event, with activities for large and small alike. For heavy fighters, we have a cornucopia of fighting activities, featuring counted bearpits, team melee's and a Grand Melee'. This is a 300 acre field (or more). If there is an army, there may even be a War Practice, at his Excellency's discretion. Rapier fighters will be offered the choice of either an early tournament or a late tournament or both. For competitors of a gentler nature, there will be games typical of a mid-thirteenth century Bavarian festival. Arts and Sciences will be represented by works in progress, so bring your current project. Come evening, a simple feast of beast and bread, with fruits of the season, will be served. ("Hey BooBoo, its a picanic") Lemonade will accompany the feast. A grand Bardic circle will follow with a sumptuous prize awarded to the best entertainment, as judged by a panel of gentle ladies. Sunday morning may, we hope, bring Cambok with the sun.

Fees for the event have been kept to a minimum, to encourage attendance by all and sundry (especially sundry). Four dollars buys admission to the site. A further four dollars brings dinner with it. Reservations made after Emerald Joust must include two dollars premium for inattention (that is, reservations after Emerald are $6/10). Make cheques payable to "Barony of Caer Mear, SCA, Inc."

Directions to the site are as follows:

From the North or South, make your best way to I-295, the Beltway in Richmond. Take the Meadowbridge Road South Exit and proceed down this historic highway until you come to a swamp. Just across the swamp, there is a set of Railroad tracks. About six hundred yards beyond the tracks, on your left, is the entrance to the site. Signs will be posted, at intervals, to assist the lost. If you have any questions, feel free to call me, Werhener von Ingolstadt (AKA Vernon Willet) at (804) 226-2303 (before 10:00). Reservations may be mailed to 2407 Carlisle Avenue, Richmond Virginia. 23231. A paid reservation is a made reservation. Come join us for a Birthday Party to make Bilbo's head spin. Your Servant,

Ingolstadtus Autocratus

Roxbury Mill Rapier Tourney

Greetings, one and all, from Tadhg macAedain uiChonchobhair.

I would like to take this opportunity to invite you to a wonderful event in northern Atlantia. The event is on June 22 and 23 in Hagerstown, MD, so should be accessible to our cousins in the East and the Middle.

The Shire of Roxbury Mill is hosting the rapier portion of the event; Highland Foorde is hosting the remainder (archery, heavy weapons, and A&S). The event itself is a demo during the day (so there will be lots of people with questions) and ours in the evening at the Jonathan Hager House. The only cost is for the feast ($7 before June 10, $8 thereafter). Camping. Dry by day, discreetly wet after dark.

Hereafter are the details for the rapier portion:

Rapier activities will include the playing of Prizes, a Bear Pit list, melees and training for melees, the Lady Jane Scenario, a Schlager Demonstration, Grass Before Breakfast (Sunday dawn duels), and possibly a Round Table Discussion regarding what rapier combat is about, what it means, and the regional differences found in Atlantia. The activities will start early and run into the evening, with a lunch break during the heat of the day. Grass Before Breakfast will be duels held at dawn or so on Sunday. They are intended to be a high persona activity, spectators are not expected. Autocrat(rapier): Tadhg macAedain uiChonchobhair, (301)942-9551; Autocrat(event): Gordon the Righteous, (301)473-8015.
