Kingdom of Atlantia Old Event Details: June 1995

Date: Thu, 11 May 95 16:51:53 EST
From: chuck graves <chuck_graves@mail.hq.faa.gov>

Greetings to all the reveler's at the Merry Rose.

Lady Aislynn Fyrlocc has asked that I announce an upcoming event, The Squire's Revolt. First, a little general information (which I borrow from Lady Aislynn's upcoming ACORN announcement):

Its

SPRING'S END

(again)!
and this year THE SQUIRES (are) REVOLT(ing) (don't say it....)

Come to the fair Barony of Ponte Alto, pick a side, and join in the fun as squires, freescholars, and other unbelted fighters stage a revolt, um, demonstrate their skills (yeah, that's it!) against the Knights of the realm and the Members of the Academy d'Espe'.

The forums for the rebellion, um, demonstrations will be "a Castle gate battle, a tag-team melee', and a regular team melee' for the Heavy fighters, team melee's and a challenge tourney for the duellists, and archery for all. Further info on the battles is available from the autocrat.

[ additional contribution from Felicia:

Location: Herndon, VA -- St. Timothy's Church -- van Buren St. & Herndon Pkwy

Costs: $12 on-board, $6 off-board, If not paid SCA member, add $3 to price. Musicians half-price (but you can't halve the non-member surcharge, darn).

Directions to site: I-495 to exit 12 "Rte 267/Dulles Toll Road" (is left-hand exit if approached from south). Pay 75-cent toll. Follow toll road to exit 2 "Centreville Road". At end of ramp, go right onto Elden Street. After 2 lights, go right onto Herndon Parkway. Then go left onto van Buren Street. Look for St. Timothy's on right.

and now back to Tadgh's comments... ]

[ All very well and good but WHY would Tadhg be interested...heh, heh, heh... why obviously I haven't announced the GOOD part yet: ]

For the non-combat inclined, there will be a brewing competition, a games room, and a bardic competition. In keeping with the "Spring" theme, the brewing competition will have the following categories: 1) beers and ales, 2) meads, 3) quick mead, 4) small ales, and 5) short wines (where quick, short, or small implies less than 1 month to brew.) Categories 4 and 5 will probably get combined (possible even with 3). The bardic competition will be for all bardic arts, for single as well as group performers, and will focus on period works. Judging criteria will include whether the piece is pre-1600, documentation of sources, period presentation (e.g. instrumentation/language), and performance quality. Winners will be asked to perform during the feast. We request that all documentation for the competitions be available for display on the A&S Table. Contact Lord Tadgh, Kingdom Brewmiester, at: 301-942-9551 for further information on the brewing competition and Lady Anne of Carthew at 703-437-6271 for further information on the bardic competition.

[ So for my part, I would like to take this opportunity to STRONGLY ENCOURAGE everyone interested in the brewing or bardic to get started. From the brewing side, there are 5 categories--4 of which can be finished in time for this event...oh, yes, the event is on June 17. So go ahead and get started...beers and ales take about a month (so get hot)...small meads, ales and wines take 1 to 4 weeks (so plan accordingly). If you have any questions, you can call me or just write back...you know where I am.

[ Felicia also notes that the bardic competition isn't just for singers, it's for single or groups of musicians, vocal or instrumental. Bring documentation. ]

That's all I have for now...off to the kitchen...I want LOTS of stuff to judge.

See you in Ponte Alto,
Tadhg
(who doesn't believe squires could ever be considered revolting) ]

Assessment

Black Diamond, 23-25 June 95

The Barony of Black Diamond invites all of Atlantia to come to their Royal Majesties' Assessment. The Pennsic Wars are drawing near and all--- Whether artisan, fighter, bard, and others--- are asked to come in order that Atlantia's strength in all areas may be known and a small sampling of Pennsic may occur.

The site is Lake Nelson Campground, site of last year's Assessment. This is a tenting event, with showers and toilets, and a pond for swimming. Lake Nelson Campground will open at 5:00 on Friday and will close at noon on Sunday.

The heavy fighting at His Majesty's request will be a war practice similar to that held at last years Assessment. There will be a duello as well and exact format will be decided by the time you read this.

There will be several A&S categories with Pennsic rules as the effective guidelinesfor judging and documentation. The A&S categories (which consist of Pennsic categories lumped together): Calligraphy & Cartography &Illumination; Weaving & Knitting & Dyeing & Spinning & Crocheting; Embroidery & Costume & Accessories; Leatherworking & Metalworking & Armour & Weapons; Poetry; Misc. These categories may be subdivided or joined with another (misc) depending on the number of entries in each.

The feast will be a 3 remove feast cooked my Lord Morien Gwyn Bran (Rick Herndon). The feast will be extremely varied and vegetarians will be happy with the feast served. All dietary concerns should be addressed to the feastocrat.

European dancing will again take place in the feast hall after feast, and I am sure bardic storytelling and middle eastern dancing will also take place again. All bards are welcome and those willing to volunteer their services will be greatly appreciated.

So, at last we come to prices:

$7.00 site fee before June 9th
$9.00 after June 9th and "At the door"
$5.00 feast fee at any time...200 spots are available.
