Bread and Circuses Collegium II

Black Diamond, 4 March 1995

Come stimulate your mind and hone your skills at Black Diamond's Bread and Circuses Collegium II, March 4 1995. This collegium is being held to further the knowledge of all gentles who attend in their pursuit of greater learning and understanding in the Current Middle Ages. Knowledgable instructors from across the Kingdom, including such notables as Master Chirhart Blackstar, Baroness Ceridwen ferch Owain, Baroness Kyleah, Baroness Eliska Alexandrova, Mistress Jeanne Tennuer de Bec, will be teaching interactive classes in such areas as Armoring, Bardic Singing, Bardic Storytelling, Belly Dancing, Calligraphy, Card Weaving, Courtesy, Eventing, Heraldry, Illumination, Marshalling, Poetry, Rapier, Sewing, Slow Work, and Weaponry.

The classes will be held in Litton-Reaves Hall on the campus of Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA. Site opens at 8 am with classes lasting until 4 pm. Four classes will be taught every two hours with breaks in between to allow gentles a chance to eat and refresh themselves. Breakfast, lunch, and snacks will be served. After the classes an Auction will be held to raise funds for the Barony. In the evening there will be a pot luck feast and revel held at the site. Bring a dish to share or a $3 contribution. The site is Dry and closes at 11 pm.

Directions: Take I-81 to exit 118 (route 460). Take 460 West to 314 (Southgate Drive - approx. 15 minutes. Follow signs for Va Tech.). Take a right on 314 (it's a stoplight). Take first left onto Duck Pond Drive. Take first right onto Washington Street. Take first left into parking lot for Wallace Hall/Litton-Reaves Hall. Litton-Reaves is the building on the corner to your right. (There will be signs starting at the turn onto Southgate Dr.)

Winter's End Dance

... on Saturday, March 25, 1995. Join us in celebrating the end of Winter and the coming of Spring with dancing, feasting, and general revelry. There will be dance instructors to help you learn the dances, and children will be invited to join in several of the dances (at least!). There will also be other children's activities.

There will be a no-theme, general Arts & Sciences Exhibit. Please contact Master Daniel of Rutland, (301) 834-6515, if you have special requirements for displaying your work. We encourage exhibits that explain the process and material used.

In a departure from the usual, the feast this year will be prepared and served in three removes. A variety of vegetarian dishes are planned, and there will be vegetarian dishes in each remove. If you have food allergies, you need to contact the Feastmistress, Lady Diedre Ni Aodhfionn (Jean Lewis-Antcliff), 1800 Rocky Glenn Dr., Frederick, MD 21702- 3020, (301)662-1856 BEFORE the day of the event. If you do not, we cannot guarantee that there will be anything you can eat. Recipes for all the dishes will be available on-site.

As last year, the site will be St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 14 South Potomac Street, in Hagerstown, MD. It is a DRY site, but a post-revel will be held within walking distance of the event, and will be most decidedly wet. Directions to the post-revel will be distributed at the event. Candles at the event must be globed or enclosed, but are nonetheless encouraged. The site opens at noon and closes at 9:00 pm.

Merchants are invited to bring their SCA-related wares (as long as it's not blatantly out of period, it's probably okay - if you aren't sure, contact the autocrat ahead of time) to offer to the populace.

FEES: On-board: $7 until March 11, $9 thereafter and at the door. Off-board: $3 until March 11, $5 thereafter and at the door. Children under 12 are half-price; Children 4 and under are free. DIRECTIONS TO THE SITE: Find your best way to I-70 at Hagerstown, MD. (Note: if coming on I-81, take I-70 EAST). Take exit 29, Rte. 65 North towards Hagerstown. Go 2.1 miles, then the street splits at a point with a flashing light. Keep right and continue to the 3rd stoplight, Antietam Street (there is a stone church on the corner) and turn LEFT. The first light is Potomac Street. Turn LEFT. The church is on the right. The driveway is after you pass the church, by a Norge Laundry. Don't park in reserved spots. (To exit, just continue back on Potomac St. to I- 70). Note: if you are coming from Ft. Ritchie or Waynesboro, PA area, call the autocrat for less roundabout directions to the site.


The Barony of Ponte Alto presents it's annual

St. Patty's Day Bloodbath

March 25, 1995 at Nottoway Park, Vienna VA
On Saturday, March 25, AS XXIX, all warriors, heavy and light, are invited to assemble in the fields of Nottoway Park in the Barony of Ponte Alto to draw blades and match skills for the sheer glory of skilled combat. The park will open at 10:00, authorizations will start at 10:30, and the tourneys will begin at 11:00. The heavy weapons tourney will be the traditional bear pit, the duello tourney will be Marshall's choice.

Site fee will be $3.00 (plus the $3.00 surcharge for non-members), those under 12 will be guests of the Barony. A lunch of stew and bread will be provided free of charge, as well as hot drinks to ward off the cold breezes. The tourney will end at 4:00, and the site closes at 5:00. DIRECTIONS TO THE SITE:

The site is Nottoway Park on Old Courthouse Dr in Vienna, VA. Take best route to I-66 W. Take I66 to the Nutley St. exit, and follow signs towards Vienna. Go through three lights, and turn left onto Courthouse Dr. (NOTE-- Street sign is abbreviated "OLD CTHSE") Go .25 miles, park entrance is on your left.
