I don't think Basil is saying Greg is cheating. I think he is saying that
his server or Greg's or the great email genie has arranged it so that he
chronologically received Greg's response to the question BEFORE he saw
the original email with the question.

As I have had emails show up months after they were sent, I can understand
his angst.
