I agree wholeheartedly with everything here. I would also add that
many alliances are willing to take on temporary members on the
understanding they will go their own way later. Alliances do not have
to be forever. Think of them more like the old exploring trading
Companies where a group banded their assets together for a task and
split the rewards. The Brotherhood are like that only we don;t bother
with the trading bit :-)

Anyway my point is most alliances need mundane things like towers
built and peasants recruited done that a new arrival can do and study
at the same time and get paid in gold, access to towers, skills, etc.

And always ask for maps and the like. Most people will give out
limited maps of the area of interest if you ask nicely. Well I do.
