Well not enough to go on completely here,
but if you drop an artifact the NPC is uncontrolled. He/she/it then
vanishes. You search for or pickup the artifact and the NPC is back.
Why is this a BUG? What it simulates is freeing the creature and then
using the artifact to gain control of a new creature.
