There was a bug that supposedly got fixed a while ago:
A runaway noble that got killed didn't get you your noble-points
back. This was supposed to be fixed, if I remember correctly...

Can anyone confirm this?

Since Rich hasn't been answering my cries for help, I suppose the
g2-list might wake him up again!
