Okay, that was pretty useless.
I'm afraid it really depends upon where you get plopped down. In
Yellowleaf,
the Illustrated Man is always looking for new factions to do chores for pay
until
they can either join an existing alliance or build a ship and sail off.
This allows
one to save their Pooled cash, which can be claimed anywhere.
The downside is that the I-Man is going to war[?unconfirmed at this time]
and
anyone seen dealing with him may be deemed a member of his alliance. But
that's how I got my merchantile combine off the ground. I now do merchant
runs as well as cargo hauling for several different factions. I'm willing
to bet at
least two of my nobles may very well be listed in someone's Intel File as
Inner
Circle, PLATO, or New Empire based on where I have been seen interacting
with whom.
If this doesn't bother you, and I don't let it bother me, _and_ you get
stuck in Yellowleaf, its an option. I am certain that the other starting
cities have players
in them willing to help new factions by having jobs or services you can do
while
you decide what and where you want to go. I mean, it certainly seems
intellegent
to do this.
Let's see where you get dropped out.
Beyond that, it depends entirely on what you want to do. Join an alliance?
Be
an Explorer. Become an Archmage. Merchantile activity is getting downright
cut
throat as markets are being restricted in many quarters. There is even a
group
of players trying to form a Guild, and another forming a religion. The
Guild makes
sense, the religion is simply chrome. I believe the Guild has a web-page,
and I may
very soon be forced to use their services.
