If you just want to add orders to one unit, you must still specify your player character's entity section. For example, suppose player [501] wanted to add an order for unit [1058]:
entity 501
entity 1058 work
The empty "entity 501" section won't affect any orders queued for 501, but is required before you can add orders to 1058.

Time spent using a skill now counts towards study. For instance, a horse-catcher who spends 20 days catching horses will learn as much as a unit which spends 5 days studying horse catching.
Units ASSISTing another unit in a task will also gain skill levels, if they have some knowledge of the relevant skills.
In the case of a parent/subskill pair, the parent skill will also increase, although half as much as the subskill. (Recall that the worker output formula gives 2/3 of the output to the subskill, and 1/3 to the parent).
Currently one does not get better at combat by being in battles, but this will be added soon. The experience bonus gained will be proportional to your opponent's size; you can't become a master fighter by always picking on units smaller than yourself.
Hello all.. I was wondering if anyone out there knows who currently controls the Imperial palace [3000] at Cnossa [204]? Perhaps it's about time that Olympia had an Emperor? I believe that enough long-term characters exist, and enough stability (the wanted list seems to be decreasing) for an Emperor to be viable.Who would be eligable? Possibly either; a) Those who possess sufficient land (ie:undisputed ownership of say,8 or greater land areas, b) Those who already wield military power (ie:>200 men?) The eligible candidates (perhaps screened by the guild masters) could then have their respective histories examined in public (Fnar, fnar) and an emeror chosen. What powers/benifits might an emeror have? i) An annual tithe from all controlled characters of say,100gps, this money to be used for civic projects/defense of the realm (ie:Dr.Pain type characters)/exploration.Money could be paid via: a taxman stationed at certain markets (or all of them default=work) anytime during the year.Failure to pay would result in nothing more stringent than say loss of membership/privaliges in the empirium. (This would mean of course they would have the same rights as independant units ie:none.ie:certain death at the hands of all those potential psycho's out there.) ii) The privilages of POWER! To balance the emperor,a Senate could be formed from eminant landowners, military leaders and Guild leaders - with the power to overthrow any of the emperors descisions following a 2/3rd majority (and of course the emperor himself). What benifits would being a member of the Imperium confer? a) A person to turn to in time of alien invasion (cf:the bunch of Orcs (no.130),savages (no.~20) and Trolls (no.2) that I bumped into last month alone...within a hopefully short time Imperial troops would be around to kick some ass! b) The ability to petition the Emperor for monies for construction/ exploration...a final court for territorial disputes and accusations etc. If you think this idea is okay let me know, and we'll try and get something organised (I don't qualify for Imperial Candidate under any of my current stipulations,so I'm not out for power here). If you don't think the time is right for this kind of element in the game (ie:you think it's too restrictive on personal freedom, too complicated, or not worth the hassle - also let me know...but don't forget we're making this world as we go along (or someone is :)) and we could always TRY an emperor for size..,..)
I just thought I'd mention it. Silk Hobarth Esq. Imperial Citizen. (gmorley@rpms.ac.uk)

Greetings Fellow Travelers: With the resource belt tightening in the land we know as Olympia, it is becoming more apparent there is a large gap between the haves and have nots. Rocko, Prenola, Bastrestric, Delf and others are attempting to deal with the emergency by setting up protectorates or area in which only their chosen units are free to work in their professions. So what of the poor unwashed? Are we doomed to be poor forever because a few exceedingly greedy individuals are using all available resources simply to maintain their hordes? Hordes which have no function beyond making money for their masters. Men are the key to controlling this land. How do you oppose the masters of the land? How do you persuade units bigger and richer than you are? Can you fight someone who outnumbers you ten to one? These are questions I raise for both the masters and the paupers such as I. Do not be fooled by this period of peace. The peasants are restless. Please contact me in support OR opposition. In your service, Sarogin Bellewood [843]

The Olympia turn checker!
It needs 7.0's and 7.5's for a gold medal!
This marvel of the midevil age reads in turn commands, checks syntax, and prints out an english version of the commands for easy checking. No longer will you buy 5 of 6 instead of 6 of 5. It also does reasonability checks (ie. you can't buy Osswid, and you can't terrorize a rug).
Binaries for Next, Vax, Sparc, Decstation and Sun3 machines running UNIX are available from shrimp.cs.washington.edu in pub/olympia. Source code is NOT available, so don't ask.
Comments/questions/bug reports to hauck@cs.washington.edu.
Note: For bug reports, please include the line that triggered the bug, and the output the checker gave.

The lore archive!
Finally open to the general public, the lore archive is the combined results of hordes of newbies studying away at their books. With about 2/3 of the written lore in our files, we're now making it available to you.
The deal - for any piece of lore you send in which isn't in our archive, we'll send you two pieces of your choices. Also, for every two subskill numbers you send in that we don't have, we'll send you one piece of lore (if you prefer, two subskill numbers from us for each new subskill number you send me).
Send a SASE to hauck@cs.washington.edu with the lore/subskill #'s. I'll send back a menu of choices if you've sent something new.
